Peeta's Burnt Bread
Peeta's bread is a reoccurring theme throughout the whole story, in the book Katniss remembers a particularly bad day when she had been starving and could not find any food, she had fallen in a puddle near Peeta's fathers bakery and witnessed Peeta's mother yelling at him to feed the burnt bread to the pigs, when Peeta realizes Katniss is laying in the rain, he tosses her some. At the time she thought of him as being kind, but never really knew that he was totally in love with her.
Food Fiction
I believe the entire Hunger Games Trilogy would work well in a Food themed Women Writers class because of its layered theme caters to two main themes of the class, strong women and the impact of food in our lives. Although it is directed to young adults and teens, it is not the common tamed down version of a greater story. Suzanne Collins has achieved to capture the audience of over privileged, cuddled teens of America with a gripping story of sacrifice and oppression.
